When my publisher at eXcessica asked us others if we had any books we'd like to add to the FREE BOOKS page at the site, "Desert Foxes Live in Concert" came straight to mind.

I think a lot of authors make the mistake of offering a throwaway story as a free read, something they can't sell to any of their publishers, something that's been sitting at the back of the hard drive for 15 years, something they don't think of as their best work.  And that's such a mistake.

For many readers, your free read is an introduction.  They've never met you, and they're familiarizing themselves with your style through your freebie.  It's got to be good.

Do readers expect a free book to represent the author's best work?  Well, that's a question I can't answer.  

But you can.  

So tell me, readers and writers, when you pick up a free read, what are your expectations?

I chose to offer "Desert Foxes Live in Concert as a freebie because I love the main character, Hrjac, (Oh, this is a futuristic story, I should mention) and I find his adoration of Andy to be so sweet, so romantic, so mushy that I wanted to put it on offer.  There's also some first-time sex in there, and... well, I love that too.
